The movie Alien broke down like a bomb in 1979. It was the movie everyone talked about, and when you saw it you could never forget it. Alien combines science fiction with horror. It is about the transport ship Nostromo and its crew. The year is 2122 and Nostromo is on his way back to Earth with his load. The crew that is in cryo sleep should not wake until one approaches, but the ship’s computer wakes them long before. After a short time of confusion, the captain learns why. A signal has been detected coming from a nearby moon. The company Wayland-Yutani that they all work for has found that Nostromo is the closest ship to the moon and asks them to investigate the matter. Ridley Scott is the director and Dan O’Bannon is the script. The music is done by Jerry Goldsmith. In the roles we see Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton,
Even though Alien became a huge hit, it didn’t take until 1986 before we would get a sequel to Aliens. This time, James Cameron is in charge of both script and directing, James Horner for music, and Sigourney Weaver returns to play the lead role of Ellen Ripley. The year is 2179 and Ripley has been in cryo sleep since we last saw her. She is rescued by Wayland-Yutani personnel and she is held accountable for the disaster that occurred in Alien 1. During the talks, she is told that Wayland-Yutani has come a long way with her colonization of the universe and that a colony of so-called terraformers has been placed on LV-426, that is, the moon her crew investigated in the first film. Ripley talks about the creature she encountered there, a so-called Xenomorph, which killed all her colleagues 57 years ago. Of course, it is completely insane to build a colony in such a place, right? To his surprise, Ripley learns that the terraformers sent there have had no problems whatsoever and the work is flowing normally. Ellen gets a penalty for getting rid of her pilot’s license. Shortly thereafter, however, comes a suspicious news. Wayland-Yutani has lost touch with Hadley’s Hope, the colony established on LV-426. Ripley now receives an offer. Against her return of her pilot license, the company wants her to follow up with a rescue mission to LV-426. If it turns out that Ripey’s story is correct and if the Xenomorph creature is the cause of the contact interruption, then the company wants an expert to join the expedition. Ripley is the only one who has met the creature so her advice can be very valuable.
Alien and Aliens were huge successes and every few years we have a number of sequels. In 1992 came Alien 3 and in 1997 came Alien Resurrection. In recent years, Ridley Scott has returned to the series and made two films set before the events of the first movie Alien. Prometheus (2012) takes place in 2023-2093. Alien Covenant (2017) takes place in 2094-2104. Now we pray to all Gods that he should make a third prequel movie, and that he may gladly tie these together with Alien 1!
