Marvel Comics was started in 1939 under the name Timely Comics and later Atlas Comics. It was first in 1961 that the name Marvel took over as the main name for the company. This was at the time when The Fantastic Four series was created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby among others. Marvel was bought by Disney in 2009.

Marvel is known for its many superheroes such as: Spider-man, Captain America, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, Daredevil, The Punisher, Black Widow, Black Panther, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Deadpool, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Wasp and Nick Fury. The most well known teams of Marvel are: Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four and Defenders. The are of course almost one super villain for every super hero in the world of Marvel and the most well known are: Magneto, Doctor Doom, Thanos, Ultron, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Red Skull, Loki, Venom, Galactus, Apocalypse and Kingpin. Most of Marvel’s characters live in The Marvel Universe and many of them are based in New York City.
