Sonic the Hedgehog was born in 1991 when his first title arrived on the Sega Mega Drive 16-Bit video game console. The main people behind the game were artist Naoto Ohshima, programmer Yuji Naka and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Since day one Sonic became the primary mascot of Sega. The first title was groundbreaking when it came to graphics, gameplay, artstyle and the sheer speed of the game. It was with Sonic that Sega broke through in the console war. Before Sonic, the Mega Drive had been a console for enthusiasts. After Sonic, not only the gamers were fans of Sega, but also the stock market.
Sonic is fighting against the mad scientist Dr Robotnik who wants world domination. The blue hedgehog uses his speed and his ability to spin-dash to defeat all the new inventions that Robotnik builds in order to defeat him. In the first game Sonic is alone in his struggle. In the sequels we get to know more of the characters in the series. The main ones are probably his friends Tails and Knuckles along with Sonic’s girlfriend Amy.
Sonic the Hedgehog i still today Sega’s biggest franchise. Besides video games there are now several TV series, comics ands merchandise. In 2020 the first feature film was released. This movie became the most successful film ever based on a video game.
