Alien hit like a bomb when it premiered in 1979. It was the movie that everyone was talking about, and when you had seen it you could never ever forget about it. Alien combines science fiction with horror. The story is about the transportship Nostromo and its crew. The Year is 2122 and Nostromo is on its way back to Earth with its cargo. The crew that lies in hypersleep is not supposed to wake up until shortly before arriving to Earth. However the ship computer wakes them up long before that. After a short confusion the captain gets to know why. He recieves a message from Wayland-Yutani, the company that owns the Nostromo and they all work for. A signal has been detected coming from a moon in the area. The Nostromo is the closest ship and they have been chosen to examine the moon. Ridley Scott directs and Dan O’Bannon has written the script. Music is made by Jerry Goldsmith. As the crew of the Nostromo we see Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto.

Alien was a success but we wouldn’t get the sequel until 1986 when Aliens had its premier. This time James Cameron would both write and direct, James Horner would do the music, and Sigourney Weaver would come back to play the lead as Eller Ripley. The year is 2179 and Ripley has been in hypersleep since we saw her last time. She is saved by Wayland-Yutani personel and she is questioned about the catastrophy that uccured in Alien 1. During the preceedings we get to know that Wayland-Yutani has come a long way in their colonisation of the universe and that a base has been built on LV-426, the very same moon that the Nostromo crew visited in the first movie. Ripley tells them about the creature that they met there, a so called Xenomorph, the creature that killed her entire crew 57 years ago. Surely it must be completely insane to build a colony there, right? To her astonishment Ripley gets to know that the terraformers sent there have had no problems and work is going according to schedule. Ellen is punished for the destruction of the Nostomo and looses her flight officer license. Shortly thereafter however, a strange thing happen. Wayland-Yutani has just lost contact with Haleys Hope, the station on LV-426. Ripley now gets a deal. She gets to have her license back if she agrees to join a rescue mission to LV-426. If Ripley’s story turns out to be true then her advise would be worth a lot for the expedition. She is after all the only one that has encountered the Xenomorph. After some serious hesitation Ripley agrees to come with the rescue mission. She does it for the families on Hadleys Hope, and a promise that this is not a science mission. Instead enough firepower will be brought to take out every possible threat that might lie on LV-426.

Alien and Aliens were huge successes and with a few years inbetween we have gotten a few sequels. In 1992 Alien 3 came out and in 1997 there was Alien Resurrection. In later years Ridley Scott has returned to the franchise and made two prequels that takes place before the first movie. Prometheus (2012) takes place in 2023-2093. Alien Covenant (2017) takes place 2094-2104. Now it is time to pray for a third prequel movie by Ridley Scott, one that can tie together them all with Alien 1.
